What is modem?

A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data for example, a telephone or a cable line. It is a type of hardware device that converts between analog and digital data for real-time two-way network communication. It connects a computer or router to a broadband network.

What is the modem speed?

The speed of a modem is measured in bps and kbps.

Types of computer modems

Onboard Modem:

Onboard Modem is a modem built on the motherboard, this modem cannot be removed, but can be disabled via a jumper or CMOS setup.

Internal Modem:

The modem that connects to an old computer on a new desktop computer or the PCI slot inside the ISA slot The internal modem shown at the beginning of this document is an example of a PCI modem.

External Modem:

Modem within a box that connects to a computer externally, usually a serial port or USB port. The illustration is an example of an external USRobotics modem.

Removable Modem:

The modem is used with older laptop PCMCIA slots and can be added or removed as needed.

Why is a modem an input and output device?

A modem is considered an input and output device because it sends data (upload / output) and receives data (download / input).
