What is a Uniform Resource Locator?

The full form of the URL is Uniform Resources Locator. The URL was defined by Tim Berness-Lee in 1994 and URLs are case-sensitive, meaning we have to take care of lower case and upper case. This is the standard way to provide the address of any resource on the Internet.

URL This is an address of a specific file, directory, or website page. Like - http://gk-hindi.in It is also called as URL. Usually the address of the website represents the home page of the website. The address protocol of any website starts with a domain name and ends with a domain code. Because we use URL word mostly while using intrnet, it is only right to have URL on the world wide web, it would not be right to say that URLs can also point to a local network resource like database, lcally hosted website etc.

This is the URL used by a web browser to access a website or web page in the Internet.

Normally the URL is made up of three parts which are as follows -

The first is a Protocol Identifier which indicates which protocol is being used.
The second part is a domain name which tells which server to bring data from.
The third part gives the path and name of the document.
